Healing the Unseen: Unpacking Intergenerational Patterns to Reach Your Goals

Have you ever felt like you’re driving toward your dreams with one foot firmly on the brake? You set a goal—maybe it’s launching a new project, setting a boundary, or finally prioritizing your own rest—but something inside you pulls back. That response often comes from something deeper, something that feels older than you.

In my work at Achara Tarfa IFS Compassionate Coaching, I often see clients who are brilliant, driven, and self-aware, yet they feel stuck in patterns they cannot change. Often, we struggle to reach our goals because we are carrying "unseen" burdens from the generations that came before us.

What are Intergenerational Patterns?

Intergenerational trauma, or "legacy burdens" in the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model, are the beliefs, fears, and behaviors we absorb from our family and culture. These stories can become deeply etched into our nervous systems.

Maybe your grandmother had to stay small to stay safe. Maybe your father learned that vulnerability was a weakness. Even if you didn’t live through their experiences, your internal "parts" might still be operating under their rules. These parts believe they are protecting you from the same dangers your ancestors faced, even if those dangers are no longer present in your life today.

Why "Parts" Block Your Goals

In IFS, we view the mind as a system of different parts, each with its own role. When you move toward a big goal, like becoming visible in your career, a "protective part" might step in and cause you to freeze or self-sabotage.

It recognizes the signs of danger—visibility might have meant persecution or judgment in your family’s history. This part is trying to protect you. Its response comes from trauma and adaptation. It’s sitting in the trenches with you, trying its best to keep you safe using old maps.

Mapping the Nervous System

To heal, we must move beyond just "thinking" about our problems. We need to look at the body and the nervous system. When we map the nervous system, we begin to notice the physical sensations that accompany our blocks.

  • Fight/Flight (Sympathetic): Racing heart, anxiety, or perfectionism when you think about your goal.

  • Freeze/Shutdown (Dorsal Vagal): Feeling numb, foggy, or exhausted when it’s time to take action.

  • Safe/Connected (Ventral Vagal): Feeling calm, present, and capable.

By mapping these states, we can start to see which ancestor’s "survival strategy" we are currently living out. It provides a sense of predictability and cognitive safety, allowing us to choose a different path.

  1. Identify the parts that are carrying burdens.

  2. Befriend the protectors so they don’t have to work so hard.

  3. Heal the "exiles"—those younger versions of you (and your ancestors) that hold the original pain.
